Ear, Nose and Throat

The ear and nose are connected by the auditory/pharyngotympanic tube that serves to equalize pressure in the ear cavity. Infections can spread between the ears, nose and throat owing to their connections with each other. Such infections are usually bacterial or viral. When the ears are affected, the symptoms include pain, hearing loss, vertigo, and discharge. Nose infections usually cause sneezing, congestion, or a runny nose while throat infections can impair swallowing and cause sore throat. Other common ENT problems include dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), otitis media (middle ear infection), gastric reflux, nose bleeds, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and tonsil/adenoid problems.

Since ENT infections are usually mild, the symptoms begin improving within a few days and the infection completely clears up in a couple of weeks. Ibuprofen and paracetamol are over-the-counter medications that can relieve pain and fever. Some common remedies that improve healing include warm compresses for earache, nasal sprays/decongestants, and warm water with honey for relieving sore throat.
