Dyslexia

Dyslexia or reading disability is characterized by difficulty in identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words. Dyslexic people have a normal IQ and vision, but the area of their brain that processes language is affected. It is difficult to diagnose dyslexia before a child enters school, but early clues such as late talking and slow learning of new words can be an indication. As a dyslexic child enters school, he/she exhibits difficulty reading, spelling, and formulating answers to questions.

Hereditary factors play a role in the development of dyslexia. Some other risk factors include premature birth, low birth weight, and exposure to drugs or infections that alter brain development during pregnancy. There is no cure for dyslexia; however, specialized education programs, tutoring, and emotional support can help children with dyslexia excel in school.
