Skin

With a surface area of just under two squared meters in adults, the skin is the largest organ of the body. It provides a barrier against physical stress, helps maintain the temperature of the body, prevents the loss of water, and protects the body from the entry of harmful microorganisms. Skin disorders can severely affect the quality of life and may sometimes be life-threatening.

Skin diseases number more than two thousand and affect people of all ages. Most people present to their dermatologists with lumps, rashes, itching, blisters, and sensitivity to light. Pruritis/itching is a common condition that can have many underlying causes, including eczema, scabies, and urticaria. Establishing the cause of each symptom is crucial for planning intervention. Both topical and oral medications can be used to relieve discomfort.

Cancer of the skin is the most common of all cancers. The skin is subject to the impact of many environmental factors and often exposed to UV light and carcinogens, leading to a high incidence of abnormal cell division and cancer. If caught early, skin cancer has a good prognosis.
