Heart

The heart is a vital organ supplying oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body and then pumping deoxygenated blood back towards the lungs for oxygenation. Heart disease is a leading cause of death worldwide; hence, taking care of cardiovascular health should always be a priority for everyone. Because of its latency, heart disease tends to progress to a very advanced stage before the symptoms become recognizable. Blood tests for certain markers of heart attack and electrocardiography (ECG) are valuable tools for the diagnosis of heart attacks.

Some risk factors associated with heart disease are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and diabetes. The incidence is higher in women over the age of 55 and men over the age of 45. The strategies for the prevention and timely treatment of heart disease have a high success rate. These include switching to a healthy diet with low cholesterol and saturated fatty acids, staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding alcohol overuse. A heart attack requires prompt medical attention. Timely intervention with the administration of antithrombotic agents and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) significantly reduce mortality.
