Hearing

The ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations through the ears is known as hearing. Good hearing is important for leading a quality life, as it allows one to communicate well, enjoy pleasant sounds, and be aware of dangers. Hearing loss/deafness is of many different types and intensities, ranging from mild to complete loss. It may be unilateral or bilateral, progressive or sudden, and congenital (from birth) or delayed onset (appearing later in life). Some degree of age-related hearing loss is normal and usually treated with hearing aids.

Hearing loss is grossly divided into three different types:

  • Conductive deafness

This type of hearing loss is caused by defects in the conductive system of the ear. It can often be treated with medicines or surgery.

  • Neural deafness

This type of hearing loss is caused by improper nerve conduction of signals from the ears to the brain.

  • Mixed deafness

This is a combination of conductive and nerve deafness.

The treatment of hearing loss depends upon the cause and severity of the loss. Removal of wax blockage, hearing aids, cochlear implants, and surgical procedures can all help improve hearing.
