Eyesight

The ability to see clearly is crucial for maintaining a good quality of life. Disorders of vision are classified into three main categories:

  • Myopia (near-sightedness)

In this condition, near objects can be seen with clarity, while far objects seem blurred. This is caused by an eyeball that is too short or a lens that is too thick, causing images to be focused in front of the retina.

  • Hypermetropia (far-sightedness)

This disorder is characterized by the inability to see near objects clearly while objects at a distance can be seen with ease. It occurs when the eyeball is too long or the lens is too thin, causing light to be focused behind the retina.

  • Astigmatism

This condition occurs when the cornea or the lens has mismatched curvatures in two planes.

Presbyopia is an age-related condition in which neither near objects nor objects at a distance can be seen clearly. Visual acuity (sharpness of vision) is typically restored using glasses, contact lenses, and surgical treatments (such as laser surgery). Food rich in vitamin A, such as cod liver oil and spinach, also helps maintain a healthy vision.
